yes i'm blogging again! amazing right. this post is regarding the recently concluded coda2 at VCH (which, admittedly, wasn't very good. but give face la haha). i dunno, it just got me to thinking about certain things.

what makes a good section

1. passion
well duh it's good if your batch is fun and you have outings and you even find a girl you like in band (:O), but you're there first and foremost to make music. practice and playing should always take first priority. that implies focus during sectionals and combined pracs.

2. teamwork
a section is only as strong as its weakest member. u only have to hear people talk during concerts to know that. do u want others to say, "hey that guy's good", or do u want them to say "hey, that section is damn good"? yup. so help your sectionmates along. it's no use being pro alone, if you are even that.

3. commitment
following up on the same point, think of pracs as a responsibility; to your sectionmates, as well as to the band in general. if you screw up, it will reflect not only on you, but on your whole section, and sometimes on the whole band as well. all the more so if you're playing a solo or u happen to be in percussion section. so make it a point to come down and practice. you aren't going to play well if u come for only half the pracs.

4. pride
take pride in your playing. seek self-improvement as often as possible. easier for percs, cos there's always strokes to practice yeah. but besides that, you should work on instrumentation too. i confess that i haven't been doing enough of that >< that has to change. at the same time, take note of your sectionmates' progress as well and do give constructive feedback/criticism. that applies to me too.

okay this is very individualistic. but hey, u need to work hard by yourself before we can come together as a section and play well. playing as a section requires group effort, of course, but in the end you're the only one playing your part. so u have to work hard at it individually, keeping in mind how best to play and complement the section and band sound. this is kinda unique to percs section; we're the only section where each person plays a unique part. so in that sense it's more important than ever to listen to each other, to the band, so that u can play properly for your own part. to do this requires a lot of individual attention, though discussion within the section does help.

and to end it off, i quote what i always tell new bass drummers: 2 things above all to remember, timing and dynamics. this same general principle can be applied to all perc instrus. we are often the most visual and the most audible instruments in the band, so tight control has to be exercised as well. and im going damn offtrack >< anyway the point is that section support is often the way to go to achieve all these things, so yeah, value your section and play as a section. it isn't all about you.
